BUS 110 Week 5

Another great week of hitting the books down. This week in class we had some cool reading assignments. We started a new book called Mastery by George Leonard. It was a really interesting book about how to create mastery of a skill. It started of talking about different mindset that people have and how we are going to have times that we will plateau in our progress of a skill and we need to be ok with that and keep going through the motions during those times. Often times while we are doing that it is “boring” but it is what is necessary to reach the next growth stage.

I have experienced this is my life especially in athletics. For many years I have swam, cycled and ran and in each of those there are times of growth and times of plateaus and it’s not easy to be in that stop. I have always found a sense of accomplishment and a break through in growth eventually. I also reflected on some of the things I am doing in my work and in my fitness goals and I can see plateaus I am on know and it gave me some hope that I will have a break through eventually.

While I don’t know if this is going to be a part of the mastery book I also saw a video from Mark Manson talking about people who are professionals and masters of different skills. He was focused on the phenomenon that so often those who are really good at something don’t think they are very good and people that are below average thing they are good at it. He explained that there are 4 areas of knowledge.

1. Things we know that we know.

2. Thinks we know we don’t know.

3. Things we don’t know that we know.

4. Things we don’t know that we don’t know.

He explained that often those who are really good at something get so good at it they no longer think about the basics of the skills and thus “Don’t know that they know it”. For example, MJ can shoot a free throw with his eyes closed. The other factor is that when someone is really good at something knows a lot about the skill and knows more of what they don’t know and know all the different ways they can improve and thus feel like they are not very good at things. This is another at times discouraging Factor that we will need to overcome on our way to mastery.

Other quick notes…

We had a really cool assignment to make an imaginary board of directors with people both alive and past. I feel like I had some great picks personally. It was a really fun thought process. On a different but similar personal note. My mom had surgy this last week everything went well luckily however when important people in your life have surgery you have to think about the “what if it doesn't go well”. My is an awesome mom but she is also my boss in the family business doing social media marketing. Thinking about what if the business fell directly onto my shoulders was a little scary and it was an interesting thought exercise of what I would do if I had to take over the responsibilities of the business tomorrow. Luckily everything went well and I am glad I didn’t need to take over the business.
