BUS 110 Week 6
This week had many interesting things to study in my classes. In one class we learned about the process of hiring highly skilled employees, how to work with people, and how to initiate conversations with people you don’t know. Those things were great but… that’s not the point of this blog post so let me get to the meat and potatoes. I was really impressed by my reading in Mastery. We learned about the importance of finding a good teacher/coach in the skills we want to learn. We learned about how to pick a good teacher and what to look for. You need to learn about the ability of the teacher but being able to do what they are training you to do is not 100% necessary. For example, most of the coaches in the NBA would not win a game of 1 on 1 against their players but they understand the game and have shown their ability to understand the game. It is also important to understand the motivation of the teacher. Look out for “teachers” who are teaching to make a quick buck. It is important that once we find a good teacher we need to give over our will to the teacher and be willing to do whatever the teacher asks. Sometimes we are not going to understand what the teacher asks but if you have the right teacher then it is in our best interest. A great example is the karate kid movie where he had to paint the fence, and sand the floor in order to learn “karate” the student didn’t understand why he needed to complete those tasks until Mr. Miyagi showed him how it was helping his technique. I think that for most skills we learn we won’t be required to do tasks that are so drastically different from the skill we want to learn but we need to be willing to do the things that might be hard or feel embarrassing.
Overall I am really enjoying the Mastery book and have been impressed with the idea of enjoying the process during the processes not just after we have success.
