BUS 110 Week 2
This week was a super fun week of studying toward my goal of being an entrepreneur. Here are some hot takes from what I studied
1. Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want -Randy Pausch
- Things connected to that are that we need to live our lives experimenting and wondering. How can I make the world better and make myself better, then try things and see if they work? If they didn't work evaluate why and then work to improve it next time. There are no failures just learning and we will be able to do that quickly without losing hope if you focus on failing forward
2. Our businesses are supposed to be connected with our relationship with God.
- God wants us to have success and we will have more success when we listen to God and what he has set up for our lives. Heavenly Father wants us to be self-reliant and be able to be our own people.
3. We should have a larger vision guiding us and our business.
- In launching leaders, teaches the principle of beginning with the end in mind in chapter 2. There is power in figuring out where we want to go and making sure what we do is leading us in that direction. I heard a story of this that the founder of IBM worked with his team and set forth what the end of the business would be and what the mature business would look like then they woke up every morning and started working towards that business.
4. In studying for my leadership class we discussed a case where a Brazilian businessman showed great leadership skills in business and let his people take the reins more and didn’t micromanage.
- He was able to get great results from helping his employees really have control of their destiny and were able to get their buy-in on the business, they wanted to make it happen because they felt like they had ownership of the company.
5. Randy Pausch also said that “It’s about how we live and karma will take care of the rest”
- Many of us want to achieve big goals. I know I do but if we do that with disregard for everything else we will not truly be happy. We are going to have a great life if we can really work to do what is important and help others get what they want and eventually we will get what we want.
6. A big theme in different readings I have done including chapter 1 of Launching leaders is that we need to start with the end in mind and decide how we really want to live.
- I need to have a focus for my life in order to give myself direction. I had an experience where I was open-water swimming and I had been focused on the buoy we were swimming out to, but when I got to it I turned around and realized how strong the current had been pushing against me. I mentioned that I hadn’t realized how strong the current was to another swimmer and she said she had noticed because she saw how slowly she was passing the house on the shore. I thought this was interesting because I had not been looking at the house and comparing myself and my only goal was to reach for the buoy. I think our life plan and goals are to help us keep that long view sight.
